I am honored to be a part of the inaugural ToneBase Summer Piano Camp, held in bucolic Vermont, with its stunning faculty. My residency will be for four days, and include lessons, master classes and lectures on some of the technical principles explored in my ToneBase videos. Emphasis, as always, on the all-encompassing “Master School of Modern Piano Playing and Virtuosity,” collated by the brilliant pedagogue Alberto Jónas (1868 – 1943), pictured here.
See my piano pedagogy video lecture [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InY2RoiGHQg&t=576s], given in Portugal in 2011, for more insight into Jonás’ superb pedagogical resource.
I will give two performances of my autobiographical theater show, “Of Pigs and Pianos,” presented by the American Pianists Association in conjunction with Yamaha Pianos. Produced and directed by Phillip Baldwin, Sal Trapani and Bonnie Barrett.
I will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in C major, with my own cadenza, under the baton of one of my favorite conductors, Rossen Milanov.
I will perform Richard Strauss’ Burleske, with Carlos Izcaray conducting.
On this celebratory occasion, marking the 40th year since my New York recital debut, I will perform works of J.S. Bach and Miklós Rózsa (his formidable Piano Sonata of 1948), and the United States première of the jazz-infused Preludes by the brilliant Hungarian composer Péter Wolf, from his two books of the Wolf-Temperiertes Klavier.
The photo shown here is of myself with Péter Wolf in Budapest, last autumn.
I will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in C major, with my own cadenza, under the baton of one of my favorite conductors, Rossen Milanov.
I will play a solo recital with commentary.
I will play Camille Saint-Säens’ dazzling Second Piano Concerto, under the baton of Maurice Cohn.
I will give a master class for the talented young musicians of this prestigious arts institution and school.
I will play two performances of an all-Latinx piano recital, on February 17 (evening) and February 18 (afternoon), with works by Maniel de Falla, Joaquín Nin-Culmell, Joaquín Turina, Federico Longás, and my own suite “Escenas callejeras del Bronx.”
