I am honored each year to adjudicate this important Japanese scholarship competition, where I hear the best young pianists in the country.
I will give a lecture-demonstration about the intersections of music, language and culture in the piano compositions of Olivier Messiaen (1908 – 1992) and his Japanese counterparts Akio Yashiro (1929 – 1976), Kouji Taku (1904 – 1983), Toru Takemitsu (1930 – 1996), and others. I will perform a solo recital of music of Mozart, Gershwin and others on this prestigious Halifax concert series.

The second of two concerts devoted to the indelible New York music of George Gershwin (1898 – 1937) and Dana Suesse (1909 – 1987), with the skyline of Brooklyn Bridge and the East River as backdrop. On this program are Suesse’s delicious “Cocktail Suite,” “110th Street Rhumba” and “Night Sky”; and Gershwin’s Three Preludes and Second Rhapsody (“Rhapsody in Rivets”) in my own virtuoso arrangement for solo piano.
The Winter Edition of the Newport Festival presents a chamber recital featuring myself with violinist Stephanie Chase. We will perform Sonatas of Wolfgang Mozart and Richard Strauss, works of Miklós Rózsa, and Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane.
