I will perform Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor — that’s CLARA Schumann, who wrote the demanding and irresistible work when she was just 14 years old. There are three performances, on February 9, 10 and 11.
I will perform Mozart’s Concert Rondo in A major KV 386 (with my own cadenza), and the Burleske of Richard Strauss, under the baton of the wonderful Tania Miller.
You can see our performance of the Strauss with the Victoria Symphony here, on YouTube.
Morning Solo Piano Recital, followed by a reception and Master Class for young pianists.
I am honored each year to adjudicate this important Japanese scholarship competition, where I hear the best young pianists in the country.
I will give a lecture-demonstration about the intersections of music, language and culture in the piano compositions of Olivier Messiaen (1908 – 1992) and his Japanese counterparts Akio Yashiro (1929 – 1976), Kouji Taku (1904 – 1983), Toru Takemitsu (1930 – 1996), and others. One of many exciting events during the CESEM (Center for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music) Encontro Internacional de Piano Contemporâneo.
Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 3 in C minor, with conductor Rossen Milanov.
I will perform a solo recital of music of Mozart, Gershwin and others on this prestigious Halifax concert series.
Competition adjudication. This year’s Philadelphia chapter competition will take place at Temple University.
The second of two concerts devoted to the indelible New York music of George Gershwin (1898 – 1937) and Dana Suesse (1909 – 1987), with the skyline of Brooklyn Bridge and the East River as backdrop. On this program are Suesse’s delicious “Cocktail Suite,” “110th Street Rhumba” and “Night Sky”; and Gershwin’s Three Preludes and Second Rhapsody (“Rhapsody in Rivets”) in my own virtuoso arrangement for solo piano.
